The arabic word sabr is often defined in english to be patience, however, according to Abdullah Yusuf Ali, an educated linguistic in the languages english and arabic who has put a great effort in translating the Quran explains that the meaning of sabr is broader than simply patience.
Before understanding the full meaning of Sabr, lets start by understanding the full meaning of patience. Patience according to the Websters english defiition can be defined as sustaining trouble, unflinchingly, perseverance and a person's quality of enduarance. (Persevering meaning to persist). Synonymns to patience include composure, endurance, forbearance, fortitude, and long suffering. The opposite being impatience, nervousness and restlessness Synonyms of perseverance include constancy, determination, fortitude, persistence and steadfastness.
